Gerbil Cage Setup

Setting up the perfect cage for your gerbil is crucial for their health, happiness, and well-being. Gerbils are active animals that love to dig, burrow, and explore, so their habitat should reflect these needs. The ideal gerbil cage is spacious, providing enough room for running and burrowing. A glass tank or a large wire cage with deep bedding works well, as it allows you to provide a thick layer of substrate for burrowing while keeping your gerbil secure. Ensure the tank or cage has good ventilation, but avoid cages with bars that are too wide, as gerbils may try to squeeze through or chew on them.

For the bedding, materials like aspen shavings, paper-based bedding, or hemp are excellent choices, as they are safe, absorbent, and ideal for digging. Avoid cedar or pine shavings, as these can be harmful to your gerbil’s respiratory system. At least 4 to 6 inches of bedding depth is recommended to allow for natural burrowing behavior. Include a variety of toys, tunnels, and hides to encourage exploration and play. Chew toys are also essential, as they help keep your gerbil’s teeth healthy and trimmed. In addition, a sturdy water bottle, attached to the side of the cage, and a small dish for food will complete the setup. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the cage are important to prevent odors and ensure a healthy living environment.

Providing an enriching setup for your gerbil helps promote mental and physical stimulation, reducing the chances of boredom or destructive behavior. A well-organized cage with plenty of activities and space will ensure your gerbil stays happy and healthy in its home.
