Gerbil Housing

Providing proper housing for your gerbil is essential for their physical and mental well-being. Gerbils are active, social animals that love to dig, chew, and explore, so their living space should accommodate these natural behaviors. A glass tank or a large wire cage with deep bedding is ideal for housing gerbils, as it allows them plenty of space for burrowing and running around. A minimum size of 10 gallons per gerbil is recommended, but larger spaces are always better. Ensure that the housing is secure and well-ventilated, as gerbils are skilled at escaping and need fresh air to avoid respiratory issues.

Inside the housing, it’s important to provide deep, dust-free bedding like aspen shavings, paper-based bedding, or hemp, which are safe for gerbils and allow for natural digging behavior. Avoid using cedar or pine shavings, as these can be harmful to their respiratory system. Include hiding places, tunnels, and chew toys to offer mental stimulation and encourage natural foraging and chewing activities. Gerbils are social creatures, so housing them in pairs or small groups helps prevent loneliness and promotes healthy social interaction. However, make sure the housing is spacious enough to prevent territorial conflicts.

Regular cleaning of the cage is essential to maintain a healthy environment, but it’s also important to leave some of the gerbils’ scent in the cage to reduce stress after cleaning. A solid exercise wheel can also be included for additional physical activity, but ensure the wheel has a solid surface to prevent injury. By providing a secure, enriching, and comfortable habitat, you’ll ensure that your gerbils remain happy and healthy throughout their lives.
