Gerbils, like all animals, require a steady supply of fresh water to stay healthy. Although they originate from arid regions and are adapted to conserving water, they still need access to clean drinking water at all times. In captivity, the best way to provide water for a gerbil is through a small, leak-proof water bottle attached to the side of their cage. This ensures that the water remains clean and uncontaminated by bedding or food. A water bowl, while possible, is not recommended, as gerbils tend to kick bedding into it or even tip it over, leading to wet bedding and an unhealthy environment.
It’s essential to check the water bottle daily to ensure it is functioning properly, as sometimes the nozzle can get clogged, or the bottle may leak. Fresh water should be refilled regularly, and the bottle should be cleaned frequently to prevent the buildup of bacteria or algae. Even though gerbils don’t drink large quantities of water compared to other small pets, dehydration can still occur if they are not provided with a consistent water source, which can lead to serious health issues.
In addition to providing water, keep an eye on your gerbil’s drinking habits. A sudden increase in water consumption could indicate a health problem, such as diabetes, which is not uncommon in gerbils. Regular observation of their drinking patterns, alongside proper maintenance of the water supply, ensures your gerbil stays hydrated and healthy.
