Hedgehog Temperature

Hedgehogs are sensitive to temperature, making it essential to maintain the right conditions to ensure their health and well-being. The ideal temperature range for hedgehogs is between 72°F and 80°F (22°C to 27°C). Temperatures outside this range can be harmful. If the environment is too cold, below 70°F (21°C), hedgehogs may attempt to enter a state of hibernation. However, unlike wild hedgehogs, pet hedgehogs are not equipped to handle hibernation safely and may suffer from severe health issues, including hypothermia, which can be fatal. On the other hand, temperatures above 85°F (29°C) can lead to heat stress or heatstroke, which is equally dangerous.

To maintain an appropriate temperature, it’s crucial to monitor the environment closely, especially in colder months or in hot climates. Using a thermostat-controlled heating pad or ceramic heat emitter can help regulate the temperature in a hedgehog’s habitat. It’s also important to avoid placing the enclosure in direct sunlight or drafty areas. Additionally, providing a thermometer within the habitat allows for constant monitoring to ensure the temperature remains within the safe range. By keeping their environment at a consistent, comfortable temperature, you can help prevent health problems and ensure your hedgehog thrives in its home.
